Vaccination Schedule

At PAMPA we know that vaccines are safe and effective, saving many lives every year. We strongly encourage all families to fully immunize their children using the recommended schedule approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Sometimes the vaccine schedule is revised as we learn more about the best ways to protect our children. Two recent changes involve the vaccines for meningococcal infections and human papillomavirus (HPV).

Meningococcal infections are some of the deadliest infections in humans. About 10 of every 100 people with meningococcal infections will die, often within 12 hours from the very first symptoms. Since the disease is spread from person to person by close contact, students who work closely together in classrooms or who live in dormitories are at particularly high risk. Therefore, 2 doses of the meningococcal vaccine are recommended, one at 11 years old to protect through the middle and early high school years and another at 16 years old to protect through the college years.

HPV is a virus that can cause cervical cancer in women and genital warts and anal/rectal cancers in both men and women. When the HPV vaccine was first recommended it was given to girls only, but now the CDC and AAP recommend it for boys as well to protect not only them, but their future sexual partners. The HPV vaccine is recommended for all adolescents beginning at age 11. A recent study estimated that if the HPV vaccine were given to all 12 year old girls, 1300 deaths per year could be prevented in the United States.
