Fireworks

Hot summer days set the stage for fun and celebrations. The Fourth of July is just around the corner. Fireworks are always a big part of the fun. Especially during these hot and exceptionally dry Georgia days, it will be a particular challenge to experience fireworks in a safe manner.

The safest bet is to attend or participate in a community event. The risks of a homegrown fireworks display are too great when there are places where professionals can entertain your family. In spite of community options, some families will proceed with their own fireworks experience.

Georgia Law limits the range of fireworks consumers can own. Of the things on this limited list, Sparklers remain the most popular. It is likely due to the mistaken belief that they are smaller and therefore safer. However, since sparklers can reach temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, they can cause significant injuries.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists further alarming statistics. (http://www.cpsc.gov/LIBRARY/2008fwreport.pdf)

In 2008, there were 7000 fireworks-related injuries treated in U.S Emergency rooms.

Injuries to children comprised a major portion of all fireworks-related injuries, with children under 15 accounting for an estimated 40 percent of the injuries. Children and young adults under 20 suffered 58 percent of the injuries.
Because of the inherent dangers surrounding fireworks, your providers at PAMPA recommend that your family celebrate with friends and neighbors in a safe and fun community event.

Enjoy your summer!
